Gadar 2 Movie Review
The sequel to the 2001 hit film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, serves as a launch platform for director Anil Sharma’s son, Utkarsh. The iconic hand pump makes a return, along with the trademark intense expressions. This time, the story revolves around the son, who, like his father 17 years ago, confronts the villains in Pakistan. Gadar 2 presents a classic case of sticking to the same formula, offering minimal freshness in terms of character development, settings, and the plot. However, it manages to engage as a one-time watch due to its adrenaline-pumping action sequences and nostalgic references to the first film.
In Gadar, the focus was on the love story between Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) and Sakina (Ameesha Patel). In Gadar 2, the story shifts to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, seen through the lens of a father’s bond with his son. As tensions escalate, Lieutenant Colonel Devendra Rawat (Gaurav Chopra) seeks Tara’s assistance to transport ammunition to the border to aid Indian soldiers. Tara and six Indian soldiers go missing, only to be revealed as captives of Pakistan Major General Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa), seeking revenge for the deaths of 40 of his battalion members in the climax of Gadar.
Charanjit Singh, also known as Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma), takes it upon himself to find his father and ends up in Pakistan, where he too gets captured while waiting for Tara’s rescue. Meanwhile, Jeete forms a romantic connection with Muskaan (Simrat Kaur).

The film prominently features Utkarsh, almost using Gadar 2 as a launchpad for the director’s son while leveraging the fan base of Tara Singh. Utkarsh delivers a convincing performance, transitioning from an aspiring actor in the first half to a rugged action hero in the second, reminiscent of his on-screen father.
Sunny Deol reprises his character’s innocence and lights up the screen with his presence. Tara is portrayed as a peace-loving man who resorts to extreme violence only when necessary. Ameesha Patel’s performance is mediocre, lacking variation from her role in the first film. However, the chemistry between Tara and Sakina remains sweet and pure. Manish Wadhwa, as the antagonist, exudes evilness and a strong screen presence.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 50 minutes, Gadar 2 could have been trimmed by 30 minutes. Shaktimaan Talwar’s writing lacks standout dialogues, relying on familiar patriotic slogans. The recreated versions of Main Nikla Gadi Leke and Udd Ja Kale Kaavan stand out as highlights, evoking nostalgia. The film also offers additional songs that add a refreshing touch. Gadar 2 doesn’t lack in patriotic fervor and action sequences in slow motion, providing moments to cheer for both Tara and Jeete.
While Gadar 2 may stumble in terms of storytelling and pacing, it brings back the essence of mass entertainment, making it a worthwhile watch for fans.
